Valparai’s Chinnakallar Tops District Rainfall Chart with 87 mm

Chinnakallar in Valparai recorded the highest rainfall of 87 mm in Coimbatore district during the last 24 hours, while Coimbatore city continued to witness only isolated light showers despite the commencement of the southwest monsoon.

Coimbatore: The ghat regions of Coimbatore district continued to receive widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Chinnakallar in Valparai recording the highest rainfall of 87 mm, according to the district administration’s rainfall report for the period between 7.30 a.m. on June 28 and 7.30 a.m. on June 29.

Besides Chinnakallar, Sholayar recorded 61 mm, Cinchona received 42 mm, Valparai PAP registered 33 mm, and Valparai Taluk recorded 31 mm, indicating moderate to heavy rainfall across the hill region. Aliyar received 4 mm, while Siruvani Adivaram recorded 3 mm and Pollachi Taluk Office registered 1 mm of rainfall. Most other parts of the district, including Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Sulur, Annur, Mettupalayam and Kinathukadavu, reported no rainfall.

The district recorded a total rainfall of 262 mm, with an average rainfall of 11.39 mm, which falls under the light rainfall category.

Although the southwest monsoon has already set in, rainfall over Coimbatore city has remained intermittent. The city is yet to witness widespread and sustained showers, with most areas experiencing only occasional drizzles or brief spells of light to moderate rain over the past few weeks.

In contrast, the ghat regions, particularly Valparai, have been receiving fairly consistent rainfall, contributing to favourable weather conditions in the hills.

While the rains have largely remained confined to the elevated areas, Coimbatore city continues to experience pleasant, salubrious weather with overcast skies and cooler temperatures, but without the consistent monsoon showers many residents have been anticipating.
