The Philatelists - Coimbatore club held its 212th meeting at Brookfields Business Center on August 25. Over 30 members from Coimbatore and Karnataka Philatelists Society participated, showcasing rare stamps and discussing philately.

Coimbatore: The Philatelists - Coimbatore club conducted its 212th meeting at Brookfields Business Center on August 25. The event, presided over by club president Muralidharan, saw participation from over 30 members, including those from the Karnataka Philatelists Society.

Ramu, a member of the Karnataka Philatelists Society, gave a presentation titled "96 Blues" about the half-anna postage stamps issued in 1854 during British India rule. The event also featured a display of the world's first and most valuable postage stamp, the Penny Black, issued by Great Britain.

Other rare stamps on display included those depicting scenes from the Ramayana, stamps issued by British India in the 1800s, and commemorative stamps of freedom struggle events and leaders. This diverse collection provided attendees with a visual journey through history.

Jai Parameswaran, a member of The Philatelists - Coimbatore, explained, "Philately is not just about collecting stamps, but also studying and researching them. Our club conducts monthly meetings where various aspects of philately are discussed. We also organize workshops in schools to create awareness about philately among the younger generation." He added that philately could be a beneficial hobby for those experiencing work-related stress, especially in an era where attention is often diverted to social media and technology.

Sriram, the secretary of The Philatelists - Coimbatore club, described philately as research centered around stamps. "Through philately, we can learn about the time period when a stamp was issued and its background. It's an excellent opportunity for those interested in general knowledge," he stated.

The event highlighted the importance of stamps as historical archives, especially at a time when historical understanding among the current generation is perceived to be diminishing. Each stamp carries a historical context, making stamp collection not just a hobby but a journey of historical exploration.

The Philatelists - Coimbatore club's regular meetings serve as a platform for philatelists to share knowledge, showcase their collections, and discuss various aspects of this educational hobby. These gatherings play a crucial role in preserving the art of philately and passing on historical knowledge to future generations.
