Coimbatore: A crucial preparatory meeting for the upcoming indirect election of the Coimbatore Corporation Mayor was conducted on August 2 at the Corporation's main office auditorium. The meeting, chaired by Election Officer and Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran IAS, focused on the arrangements for the mayoral election scheduled for August 6, 2024.

The gathering saw the participation of key officials, including Deputy Commissioner Dr. S. Selvasurabi, Assistant Commissioner Mrs. Usharani (Accounts), and Assistant Commissioner Mrs. Mohanasundari (Administration), along with other relevant officers.

The primary agenda of the meeting was to discuss and finalize the preparations for the indirect mayoral election. Indirect elections for the post of Mayor involve voting by elected ward councilors rather than direct voting by citizens. This system is designed to ensure that the Mayor has the support of the majority of the council members.

Commissioner Prabhakaran emphasized the importance of conducting a free and fair election process. The officials present at the meeting deliberated on various aspects of the election, including the venue setup, security arrangements, voting procedures, and the counting process.

The Corporation is expected to release further details about the election process and candidate nominations in the coming days. This election marks a significant event in the city's local governance, as the new Mayor will play a crucial role in shaping Coimbatore's development and addressing civic issues for the next term.
