Six arrested for poaching porcupine in Pollachi forest area

Forest department officials arrested six individuals for hunting and attempting to cook a porcupine in Kongalampalaiyam area of Pollachi forest division. The accused were caught red-handed and remanded to judicial custody.


Coimbatore: The Anamalai Tiger Reserve forest department officials arrested six individuals for poaching a porcupine in the Kongalampalaiyam area under the Pollachi forest division. The accused were caught while attempting to cook the hunted animal.

Acting on a tip-off about the illegal hunting of a porcupine, a protected wildlife species, forest rangers and anti-poaching watchers conducted patrols in the area under the orders of Coimbatore Circle Chief Conservator of Forests Ramasubramanian. The team, led by the Pollachi Forest Range Officer, divided into groups to cover the region effectively.

During their patrol, the forest officials caught six local residents red-handed near the riverbank of Kongalampalaiyam. The accused were identified as Jayaprakash, Theivaraj, Rangasamy, Lokesh, Deepan, and Mohanraj. They were in the process of preparing to cook the porcupine they had hunted.

Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to trapping and catching the porcupine in the same area. Following their confession, the forest department officials registered a case against them under the Wildlife Protection Act for poaching a protected species.

The six accused were subsequently produced before the local court and remanded to judicial custody. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by forest officials in protecting wildlife from illegal hunting activities in the region.
