Coimbatore: In a continued crackdown on the sale and distribution of banned tobacco products, the Coimbatore District Police seized 52.674 kilograms of prohibited tobacco items in Pollachi on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Acting on a tip-off about the transportation of banned tobacco products, a special team under the supervision of District Superintendent of Police Badrinarayanan, IPS, conducted a vehicle check near Makkinampatti in the Pollachi East police station limits. During the inspection, they intercepted a four-wheeler and apprehended the driver, identified as Muhammed Abideen (51), son of Abdul Rahman, from Pollachi.
The police confiscated 52.674 kg of banned tobacco products and the four-wheeler used for transportation. The accused was subsequently produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
This operation is part of an ongoing initiative by the Coimbatore District Police to create a drug-free Coimbatore. Since May 1, 2024, the district police have intensified their efforts against the sale and use of intoxicants. To date, they have registered 88 cases against 98 individuals involved in the sale of banned tobacco products and seized approximately 1,247.634 kg of prohibited items.
Superintendent of Police Badrinarayanan has issued a stern warning that strict legal action will be taken against those engaged in the sale of intoxicants or any activities that disrupt law and order.
The police have urged the public to report any information related to such crimes without hesitation. The police have assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
