Salem Railway Division Collects Rs 5.88 Crore in Fines from Ticketless Travelers

Salem Railway Division collected Rs 5.88 crore in fines from April to June 2023. Penalties were imposed on ticketless travelers, irregular passengers, and unregistered cargo transporters across Salem, Erode, and Coimbatore stations.


Coimbatore: The Salem Railway Division has reported a significant collection of fines from ticketless travelers and rule violators during the first quarter of the financial year 2023-24. According to a recent press release, the division has amassed a total of Rs 5.88 crore in penalties from April to June 2023.

Railway inspection officials have been actively identifying and penalizing individuals traveling without tickets, those traveling irregularly, and those transporting unregistered cargo on trains. This enforcement drive covers major stations within the Salem Railway Division, including Salem, Erode, and Coimbatore.

During the three-month period, the division caught 42,823 passengers traveling without valid tickets. These offenders were fined a total of Rs 3,62,25,979. Additionally, 36,619 individuals were penalized for irregular travel, resulting in a collection of Rs 2,25,46,033 in fines.

The railway authorities also cracked down on unregistered cargo transportation. They identified 83 cases of individuals carrying goods without proper registration and collected Rs 45,801 in penalties from them.

The Salem Railway Division's vigilance has resulted in a substantial increase in revenue through fines. The total amount collected during this period, as stated in the press release, stands at Rs 5,88,17,813.

This enforcement drive serves as a reminder to passengers about the importance of purchasing valid tickets and adhering to railway regulations. It also highlights the railway's commitment to ensuring fair travel practices and maximizing revenue collection.
