Three-Month-Old Elephant Calf Dies at Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai

A three-month-old elephant calf separated from its mother near Marudhamalai last May died at Theppakadu Elephant Camp despite extensive care.

Coimbatore: In a saddening incident, a three-month-old elephant calf that had been separated from its mother near Marudhamalai succumbed to health issues at Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai on the evening of June 28. The female elephant, estimated to be around 40 years old, was found in poor health on May 30 and received treatment for five days by the Forest Department officials before being released back into the wild.

The calf, initially part of the mother’s group, got separated and subsequently joined another herd. However, it later strayed from this group too and was wandering alone when it was rescued by the Forest Department in an attempt to reunite it with its mother. Despite the efforts, the reunion attempts failed, and the calf was shifted to Theppakadu Camp on June 9 under the supervision of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.

Unfortunately, despite receiving ongoing care at the camp, the young elephant's condition deteriorated, leading to its demise. The Forest Department announced the sad news, highlighting the challenges faced in wildlife conservation. The loss of the young calf is being mourned by wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
