MLA Vanathi Srinivasan Urges TN Government to Enhance Safety and Prohibit Alcohol at Tourist Spots

MLA Vanathi Srinivasan from Coimbatore South calls for improved safety measures and basic amenities at tourist spots. She also demands a ban on alcohol consumption in these areas.

Coimbatore: MLA Vanathi Srinivasan stressed the need for enhanced safety provisions and basic amenities at tourist destinations across Tamil Nadu in a statement issued today, May 7. She also emphasized the necessity of imposing a ban on alcohol consumption at these sites. The call for action follows the recent tragic drowning of five youths at Kanyakumari's Leemoor Beach.

The incident which occurred yesterday, involving students from a private medical college in Trichy, has highlighted the urgent need for better safety measures at tourist locations. The increase in accidents at tourist spots, including a recent bus crash on a mountain path in Yercaud and another mishap along the Kotagiri mountain route, has raised concerns about tourist safety statewide.

MLA Vanathi claims that most tourist sites in Tamil Nadu lack even minimal safety measures and essential facilities, which could prevent such tragedies. "With the growing number of incident reports involving fatalities of children and young individuals at natural water bodies, there's an alarmingly high risk associated with these areas," stated Vanathi.

She proposes that the Tourism Department, supported by the state government and local bodies, should ensure better guardrails at beaches, vigilant lifeguards, and restricted access during dangerous conditions. Vanathi also calls for basic infrastructures like clean toilets, secure parking spaces, rest areas, affordable eateries, and ample security, including changing rooms for women, to improve the overall experience and safety at these locations.

Moreover, acknowledging the role of alcohol in numerous mishaps, she advocates for a prohibition of alcohol at all tourist spots, pointing out that intoxicated visitors not only endanger themselves but also disrupt the enjoyment for others.
