Tamil Nadu Traders to Strike from April 3 to 19 if Demands Not Met, Says Association President Vikramaraja

Tamil Nadu Traders Federation warns of a shutdown protest from April 3 to 19 if their demands, including opposition to GST and waste tax hikes, are not addressed. A state conference in Madurai on May 5 is announced amidst statewide visits by Federation President Vikramaraja.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Traders Federation, through its President Vikramaraja, has announced a potential statewide shutdown of shops from April 3 to 19 if their demands are not fulfilled. These demands stem from issues such as the impact of online and corporate companies on local businesses, and the need for special legislation to protect traders from these giants. Furthermore, the federation expressed concerns over GST, waste tax hikes, and the operational challenges posed by such policies.Vikramaraja, who is currently touring the state to rally support, highlighted the struggles of traders during a meeting in Tirupur with local merchant association representatives.

He underscored the federation's efforts to convey their grievances to the Election Commission, criticizing the current regulations that, according to him, disproportionately affect traders, vendors, and the general public while sparing political party finances. He lamented the ineffective last-minute interventions by flying squads in the days leading up to elections.

The federation plans to submit a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner on the coming Tuesday, demanding changes to ensure fair treatment for traders. Vikramaraja warned that if their issues remain unresolved by April 19, all grocery shops across Tamil Nadu will join in a protest by closing their doors, marking a significant move to voice their discontent.

The state conference is scheduled to take place in Madurai on May 5, termed as a 'Freedom Scream' meeting, aiming to amplify their demands and grievances on a larger scale.
