Coimbatore South District Congress Committee Protests Against Electoral Bond Scam

The protest, led by the Coimbatore District Congress Committee, aimed at condemning the alleged electoral bond scam under the Modi government, raising serious concerns over transparency and legal amendments hindering information rights.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore South District Congress Committee staged a protest in Pollachi's Thiruvalluvar Thidal, denouncing what they claim is a mega scam involving electoral bonds during the Modi government's tenure. The demonstration was spearheaded by the Coimbatore District Congress Committee leader, Bhagavathi, highlighting allegations of granting favors to BJP-affiliated companies in exchange for electoral bonds, reportedly accumulating Rs 5,270 crore.

The protest voiced strong criticism against amendments made by the Modi government to laws, which, according to participants, obscure the origins of such a vast amount of money, even to the extent of restricting inquiries through the Right to Information Act. It was pointed out that in the fiscal year 2022-2023 alone, the government purportedly received Rs 20,120 crore through electoral bonds. The Supreme Court has declared the Modi government's electoral bond scheme unconstitutional, reinforcing the protestors' stance against corruption and lack of transparency in political funding.

City leader Senthilkumar, state committee member Jothimani, state legal department head Lawyer Ravi, among other administrators from the Anaimalai and Kottur regions, joined in raising various slogans, intensifying the protest against the electoral bond scam.
