Water delivery projects based on the Amaravathi river's main canal have also been halted. Following this, farmers demanded that water be released to save crops in the Amaravati River and the main canal irrigation area, as well as to meet drinking water requirements. Based on this, the authorities prepared a proposal for water release and submitted it to the government.
In this situation, not more than 1002.24 million cubic feet of water has been released to save the crops in the 10 pazhai canal irrigated areas mainly comprising the Amaravathi river and for drinking purposes. Similarly, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the release of not more than 380.16 million cusecs of water to save the crops in the new irrigation area, which is the source of the main canal, and to meet the drinking water requirement. Following this, the release of water was held at the Amaravathi dam. District Collector T Christuraj presided over the function.
M P Saminathan, Minister of Tamil Development and Information, and Kayalvizhi Selvaraj, Minister of Adi Dravidar Welfare, participated in the meeting.
Water then flowed out through the Amaravathi river satars and the main canal.
They were all greeted with flowers. The water has been released until the 9th of next month (09.07.2023).
As a result, a total of 47,117 acres of land will benefit, including 21,867 acres in existing canals irrigated by the Amaravathi river and 25,250 acres in new canals irrigated by main canals. The farmers are happy with this.
