Over 5000 Sanitary workers stage massive protest across civic bodies demanding pay parity and withdrawal of a punitive GO

Both contractual and permanent sanitary workers are participating in the massive protest.

Coimbatore: More than 5000 workers boycotted work to participate in the massive protest staged across the district including the City Corporation Office, Collector's office and other Municipal offices.

Both contractual sanitary workers and permanent Corporation workers are participating in the massive protest.

AITUC, State vice president Selvaraj led the protest.

According to sources, earlier the then District Collector Sameeran had announced a daily wage of 721 to be given for the sanitary workers, which would benefit 3500 contractual workers and 3500 permanent corporation workers.

The City Corporation had decided to extend a wage of Rs.648 to Corporation sanitary workers, Rs.606 to municipality workers and Rs.529 to workers at the Town panchayats based on the collectors orders.

However, workers allege that they are being paid Rs. 412, 475 and 475 in the Corporation, municipalities and Town Panchayats respectively.

While addressing the reporters, Selvaraj, said, “The sanitary workers played the most crucial role during the Covid Pandemic. But a GO has been passed which is affecting the livelihood of their families”.

Samooga Neethi Katchi leader N. Panneerselvam said, "Primarily these workers demand a wage hike that was officially approved by the then District collector. Sanitary Workers in Karamadai block and Gudalur zone receive authorized pay, but in the city it is not practiced. A recent GO 152 has been passed, which prohibits the new recruitment of sanitary workers.

He demanded the normalization of the recruitment process and withdrawal of the GO aimed at privatization.

The striking sanitary workers also threatened to continue with their strike if their demands are not met.
