Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Money laundering case: Coimbatore court's verdict

A court in Coimbatore has sentenced a clerk of the Coimbatore PWD Co-operative Thrift and Coin Society to three years in jail for misappropriating Rs 9,000.


Coimbatore: After a gap of 20 years, the Coimbatore district court has ruled in a case of misappropriation of money in the Public Works Employees' Co-operative Thrift and Coin Society functioning on the agricultural university campus.

Nagaraj, who was serving as secretary of the Public Servants' Co-operative Thrift and Coinage Society functioning in the coimbatore agricultural university campus between 1993 and 1994, and vijayakumar, a clerk, were accused of misappropriating Rs 9,000 from the amount paid by the members of the association.

The deputy registrar of the co-operative society Mahendran lodged a complaint with the commercial crime branch police in this regard. Based on the complaint, a case was registered in 1995 and the investigation began in 2001. One person was acquitted in the case.

Co-operative secretary Nagaraj, vice-president Sundaram and president Mohandas died due to ill-health. For more than 20 years, the trial in the case has been going on in the JM-IV court in Coimbatore.

Prasanna Venkatesh appeared on behalf of the government. Justice Saravanababu sentenced the accused clerk Vijayakumar to three years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. The court also allowed Vijayakumar to file an appeal.
