Trade Unions urge TN government to take over the NTC mills and run them

A petition was submitted to the District Collector Sameeran on behalf of 12 trade unions, representing “Save NTC” and demanding that the Tamil Nadu government take over the NTC textile mills in the state and run them.

Coimbatore: The "Save NTC" movement, formed by NTC unions across the country, has been conducting a series of protests demanding the reopening of NTC mills. These states include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala.

Meanwhile, a petition was submitted on behalf of 12 trade unions at the Camp office of the Coimbatore District Collector on Monday, pressing for the same demand.

After submitting the petition, representatives of the trade unions told reporters “ A total of 23 NTC mills are there across the country, In Tamil Nadu, there are five mills in Coimbatore and one mill each at Kalaiyarkoil in Sivagangai and Kamuthakudi in Ramanathapuram district.

But, the mills have become non functional due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Even after the Central and State governments issued orders to reopen the mills nothing materialized. The NTC workers have repeatedly leveled allegations that the basic livelihood of workers have been severely affected for the past 31 months as the mills remain closed.

“In this situation, two petitions have been submitted to TN Handloom and Textiles minister Gandhi and to the NTC-CMD on behalf of the trade union federation at the Secretariat in Chennai, but to no avail so far” the trade unionists said.

So we have petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector urging him to take necessary action to reopen the closed mills.

“Tamil Nadu government should take over the textile mills in Tamil Nadu at the earliest and save the livelihood of the workers”. The trade unionists said.
