Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Agricultural Produce Committee has submitted a petition to the Collector seeking permission from the Tamil Nadu government to allow farmers to use firearms, to cull wild boars. They cited the Kerala government permission to farmers to cull wild boars which are considered as vermin.

Wild boars have been damaging farmlands in Thondamuthur and Mettupalayam areas of Coimbatore district. Due to this, production has been affected in a big way and farmers are incurring huge losses every year.

As the farmers of Kerala were also facing the same problem, the Kerala government has given permission to cull wild boars in farm lands, last May.

Senthil Kumar, Member of Coimbatore district agricultural produce committee, said, farming activists are being carried out amid various hardships such as fickle weather conditions, fluctuating prices of produce, shortage of manpower, scarcity of water and so on.

"Since wild boars continue to damage the crops of tubers and vegetables before harvesting, farmers have been incurring huge losses. Therefore, the state and union governments should come forward to take a joint decision on this issue immediately. A petition will be given to the District Forest officer, also" Senthil Kumar said.

It may be noted that BJP's farmers' wing has recently staged a demo urging for the same issue in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's office.
