Sanitation workers boycott work near city's Ganapathy area in protest against contractor for not paying proper wages

The strike was called off only after the Deputy Commissioner assured them that the cheque would be issued on Saturday itself. The sanitation workers had boycotted work in protest against contractor Nandagopal for not paying proper wages.

Coimbatore: Sanitation workers are being employed and made to work by contractors in the Coimbatore Corporation limits. Nandagopal, a contractor, allegedly had not paid sanitation workers.

In protest against this, sanitation workers along with the Safai Karamcharis Welfare Committee and AICTU association boycotted work and staged a protest in front of Surya Hospital in Ganapathy area of Coimbatore district, on Saturday. Following the protest, talks were held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner of the North Zone.

During the talks, the Safai Karamcharis were assured by the Deputy Commissioner that they would be given cheques on Saturday itself and the wages would be credited to their respective bank accounts by the workers on Monday.

Following this, the sanitation workers who were engaged in the protest called off the strike and dispersed. There was a tense situation in the area for a few hours due to the protest.
