Thousands of devotees flock to experience Soorasamharam at Maruthamalai Subramanya Swamy Temple in Coimbatore

Thousands of devotees from districts other than Coimbatore had come to see the Soorasamharam ceremony held at the Maruthamalai Subramanya Swamy temple.

Coimbatore: Soorasamharam was celebrated at the Maruthamalai Subramanya Swamy Temple in Coimbatore yesterday. Soorasamharam, the main event of the Kanda Sashti festival, is the slaying of Soorasam.

A large number of devotees have been visiting the Maruthamalai temple since this morning. Apart from Coimbatore district, thousands of devotees from other districts had come to have darshan of Maruthamalai Subramanya Swamy.

During the Soorasamhara event, devotees chanted "Arogara... Arogara..." with devotional fervour to the point of bringing the roof down.

Early this morning, the temple was opened with Gau puja and special abishekham was performed to Lord Muruga with 16 types of perfumes including sandalwood, paneer and honey. This was followed by maha deeparadhana with special royal decorations.

Lord Subramanya appeared before the devotees in the front mandap in a goat-clad vehicle, veerabahu in a horse-drawn vehicle, in a golden armour and in a golden peacock vehicle.

In order to control the vehicular traffic, two-wheelers and four-wheelers are not allowed on top of the hill temple yesterday. Arrangements were made to park the vehicles at the base.

Therefore, all the devotees going to the temple used to travel in mini buses arranged by the temple administration. Three private buses were also operated additionally in view of the crowd.

However, the devotees who had to go to the temple had to stand in long queues and wait for the bus as a bus could carry only 39 people.

Similarly, those who could not stand in the queue could be seen walking through the stairs to the temple.

Barricades have been erected for the devotees visiting the hill temple to have darshan of the deity divided into two sections, the common way and the special darshan.

It was a one-way road to climb the stairs and descend through the Rajagopuram. Moreover, there was a water tank along the way with special facilities such as fire department, ambulance and medical camp.

Arrangements for the ceremony were made by the temple administration and Vadavalli police.
