Popular restaurant sealed

The Greater Chennai Corporation on Tuesday sealed the Peters Road outlet of Hotel Saravana Bhavan stating that it did not have facilities to park vehicles.

“There is a case in the Madras High Court pertaining to restaurants without parking lots in the city. The traffic police submitted in the court that they did not give this particular restaurant the no objection certificate (NOC) since the provision had not been still made. Following this, we issued several notices, and with the expiry of the deadline, we sealed the premises,” explained a source in the civic body.

‘Had necessary licences’

Sources in Hotel Saravana Bhavan said that they were running the restaurant in that location from 1993 and that they had all the necessary licences. “We had time till next month to show the police a parking lot and efforts are on to create a lot nearby. A High Court order states that the endeavour is to find a working solution at ground level and not to shut down the restaurants. Despite this, we have been shut down,” he said.
