Coimbatore: The blood sample collection drive carried out on behalf of the Department of Health to detect the spread of Covid-19 infection in Coimbatore was completed today.
Blood samples were collected from people in specific areas in all districts from October last year by the Health Department to detect if Covid-19 infection had become widespread in Tamil Nadu. Of these, only 22 percent of the general population in Coimbatore developed immunity. Currently, the second wave of Covid-19 infection has been sweeping across the nation, includingTamil Nadu.
In this regard, the second phase of the study was launched last week on behalf of the Department of Public Health across the state. Accordingly, blood samples were collected from people in five places in Coimbatore Corporation namely K K Puthur, Peelamedu, Gandhipuram, Ramanathapuram, Singanallur and 37 rural areas Anaimalai, Annur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi, Thondamuthur, Sulur, Madukkarai, Mettupalayam, Valparai etc.
Samples were collected from 1,260 people, with 30 blood samples per place in the 42 places that were collected. These samples were also tested. Health officials said that apart from 1,260 blood samples taken in Coimbatore district, 810 samples from Tirupur, 240 from Nilgiris, 600 from Namakkal and 780 from Erode have been sent to Coimbatore for analysis.
The study was carried out by a modern Kilaya machine at the laboratory in the office of the Deputy District Director of the Health Department, Coimbatore. Officials say that the test result will show the extent of the Covid-19 spread in the community.
