It is a major relief to the officials of the Tamil Nadu health department as they are now involved in the process of retracking and monitoring all passengers to came into the state from the United Kingdom.
According to the health officials over thirty one passengers tested negative for Covid-19 so far in Salem. Swabs collected from them are being tested at the laboratory in Government Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem.
The swabs taken from the passengers are also likely to be sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune for genome sequencing to check if it is the mutant strain of virus originating from UK.
While ten other swab results of Covid-19 are awaited, officials confirm that four others passengers are untraceable.
However, one UK returnee, who was not in the list have also been traced only to test negative for Covid-19.
Officials in Salem along with healthcare experts are taking all the precautionary steps to stop the new mutant strain from spreading in Tamilnadu. The officials have requested the UK returnees to personally come forward and inform authorities and have a Covid-19 precautionary test done.
Similarly, officials in Coimbatore are very closely monitoring the situation with UK returnees and are waiting to ascertain if all the swabs are negative.
