Nipah virus is threatening Kerala and in that virus attack, 12 had died in the State till date. The Central and State Government have started several steps to spreading of the disease and to identify and isolate the affected.
The virus was detected in Malaysia, in 1998 in a small village named Nipah, hence the virus got its name.
It is a highly contagious disease. Bats are the primary source of infection. These infections can spread through bat urine, bat saliva, and bat feces. The virus can also go from infected bat to a pig or a goat or any other animal.
Nipah virus does not have a specific medical procedure or medicine or a vaccination. The symptoms of this virus include fever, headache, body ache and fatigue.
Some of the preventive measures suggested by doctors to save us from Nipah are:
1. Avoid going to areas where bats are there. For example, caves and wells.
2. Care should be taken while consuming fruits and vegetables from bat dwelling areas. Palm sap from these places should be boiled and consumed so that the virus can be removed.
3. Wear face mask or net around you while rearing animals like piglets. Prevent any direct contact with the animal.
4. Keep bats away from the rearing animals as bats are the main causative agent for this virus. Create a physical barrier to prevent Bat entry to places where animals are kept.
5. Stay away from the infected person. No form of physical contact should be made with the patient. Persons who are taking care of the patient should only go.
6. People who are taking care of the patient must wear proper glass, gloves, mask to avoid physical contact with the infected person.
7. The patient must consume sufficient amounts of water.
8. Fruits and vegetables should be washed properly to make sure that there are no traces of bat dropping or feces on it.
