Oral health: Three quick tips for strong, healthy teeth

New Delhi: Many people tend to ignore their oral health, which touches every aspect of our lives. The fact is that whether you are 70 or 7, maintaining a good oral hygiene is very crucial.

Keeping a good oral hygiene can help you prevent most dental disease or other health problems linked to poor dental care. Studies suggest that gum disease, mostly resulting from poor oral health, can lead to other problems in the body, including heart disease and diabetes.

Poor teeth cleaning can also lead to cavities - the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth.

Here are three quick tricks and tips to keep teeth strong and healthy from childhood to old age:

Early dental care

Most children have cavities, also known as tooth decay, even before they start school. Parents should begin dental care as soon as the child’s first tooth appears. Teeth of your child can be wiped using a clean, damp cloth or very soft brush. As you child reaches age 2, you can let him/her try brushing for themselves.

Brushing and flossing

Know the basics and do your part at home. All you need is a toothbrush, some dental floss, and 5-10 minutes of your time each day. Thoroughly brushing your teeth – at least twice a day - and flossing removes bacteria and sugar in your mouth, thereby helping you to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Dental visits

While you’re doing your part, deep cleaning from a dentist can reach those areas you can’t, especially below the gums. This will help you prevent plaque and other dental problems. Do not wait until it’s too late or you feel something is wrong. By maintaining regular dental checkups, you can better protect your oral health as well as your overall health.

Besides following the above tips, avoid smoking or using smokeless tobacco. Tobacco does not just stain teeth, it also significantly increases your risk of gum disease and oral cancer.

Eat smart. A well-balanced diet of whole foods is essential to healthy teeth and gums.
