Can Diabetic Individuals Eat Papaya? Myth Busted

In today's world, all of us must have heard of diabetes. People dread the very term, thinking that it is an end to all their sweet binges. But how much about it do we know anyway?

Diabetes is caused when the body decreases the production of the hormone called Insulin.

Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and it helps in digesting and storing the sugar in our food. When the insulin amount is low, the body will not be able to digest the sugars, which in turn causes a whole lot of other issues. That is why diabetic patients are injected with insulin to make up for the shortage.

When you are suffering from Diabetes, people tend to give you all types of advices. People recommend these individuals not to eat anything sweet or even fruits, as it may suddenly increase their blood sugar level.

But it is not usually the case. All fruits may not necessarily worsen your condition. There are some which may actually help you manage diabetes.

Time and again, people have advised diabetic patients to stay away from fruits such as papaya. Reason being, it is a fruit and hence it contains a high amount of sugar. Though a few fruits like citrus fruits are bad for them, Papaya definitely isn't.

Here are the reasons why papaya is good for diabetic patients.

Low In Sugar:

Papaya is low in sugar (8.3 grams in a cup of papaya). Studies also reveal that a certain compound in papaya may slow down the progression of Type 2 diabetes.

It is also rich in an enzyme called 'papain', which protects the individuals with diabetes from the damage of harmful free radicals.

Rich in Vitamins:

It contains vitamins A and C, calcium, magnesium, iron, etc., which will keep you away from heart diseases. Because of its hypoglycaemic nature, papaya can prevent diabetes-related heart disease. Read more...
