The occupants of the car were a grandfather and his three grandchildren who were returning from a summer picnic at Malampuzha Dam.
Coimbatore: A 4-year old tragically died in a car collision while returning from a family summer outing at Malampuzha Dam.
Amal Simon from Coimbatore's Press Colony area works in a private company. The grandfather Selvaraj (65) is said to have taken the three grandchildren to Malampuzha Dam in Palakkad, Kerala on Thursday morning. The three grandchildren are Nitin Abigam (12), Calvin Carlson (9) and Yuvan Krisin (4).
Even as they were returning to Coimbatore by car on the Salem-Cochin road near the Madukkarai bridge junction, a speeding Eicher vehicle reportedly collided onto Selvaraj's car from the rear side.
The car veered out of control and collided with a tipper lorry heading towards Kerala. All four members in the car were seriously injured. Passers-by rescued the four and sent them to a private hospital by ambulance. Four-year old Yuvan who was being treated at the hospital succumbed to his injuries, while the other three are being treated in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
The Madukkarai police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the driver of the Eicher van who absconded after the accident.
