Chennai HC lawyer dies during Velliangiri pilgrimage trek in Coimbatore

When the lawyer reached the 6th hill, he reportedly told his friend that he was unwell and turned back to descend the hill, but fell unconscious and died as he approached the 5th hill.


Coimbatore: A Chennai High Court lawyer who was on a pilgrimage trek to the Velliangiri Hills in Coimbatore fell unconscious and died.

Ilanchezhiyan (55) hailed from Chennai's Villivakkam area and worked as a lawyer in the Chennai High Court. He was married and had two children. Two days ago, Illanchezhiyan visited Coimbatore with his friend Ramamurthy. On Tuesday night, both embarked on a trek to the Velliangiri Hills as a pilgrimage and began the climb. On reaching the 6th hill, Illanchezhiyan reportedly told his friend that he was not feeling well and decided to turn back. During his descent to the 5th hill in the evening, Illanchezhiyan seems to have fallen unconscious and subsequently when a doctor on the trek examined him, he was pronounced dead.

Upon being informed of the tragic incident, the Alandurai Police and the Forest Department recovered Illanchezhiyan's body and brought the corpse down to the foothills. Thereafter the body was sent to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for autopsy. The Alandurai police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
