Ramanathan (39) who hails from Theni district has been living with his family in the Babaji Nagar area of Velanthavalam on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border for the last 10 years, with his wife Rajeswari and two children. For the past year, Ramanathan had rented a small house in the Nachipalayam area, bought ration rice at affordable prices from surrounding areas, illegally hoarding it and selling it in Kerala.

Ramanathan, who had gone out on Friday night, had reportedly returned home at 8 am on Saturday after buying food. Around 10 am, a woman from the neighbourhood was passing by Ramanathan's house and was shocked to see him lying dead with bruises on his head. She immediately informed Madukkarai police who arrived at the scene and conducted an investigation.
Later, District SP Badri Narayanan and Perur Goods DSP Thirumal visited the house to investigate. A special police unit has been set up on the orders of the SP and a man-hunt has been launched to nab the mysterious persons who killed Ramanathan.
