Coimbatore: The CITU Textile and Powerloom Workers National Special Conference was held at a private hall in the Masakalipalayam area of Coimbatore.
CITU All India President Hemalatha, CITU All India Assistant President Padmanabhan, All India Secretary Karumalayan, State General Secretary Sukumaran and Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan addressed the function.
In it, the current powerloom factories, the status of the Textiles and the demands to be placed on the Central and State Governments were discussed.
CITU All India Secretary Karumalayan speaking to reporters said that “the powerloom spinning industry in India was the second largest foreign exchange earning industry after agriculture.
About 10 crore people are directly and indirectly involved in this industry and he said that the conference is being held to know about their working conditions and living conditions.
The industry is a bondage industry. There was no basic pay for the workers working here. Theft was going on in the Cotton shortage. It was not a problem caused by a drop in production, but a problem caused by counterfeiting.
Due to the shortage of cotton we have not yet produced the required yarn in India and asked the government to take action to produce it. The available yarn should be stopped from being exported to the world market.
As for the NTC plants, the Modi government has decided to close it due to corona, he said he was considering taking any action to draw global attention to the issue.
Following this, Secretary General of the State Sukumaran, he said it was the small business owners who believed that the Modi government would protect the industry when it came and were currently facing difficulties. This is because of the policy that the government is currently pursuing, he therefore called for abandoning these policies and taking action to protect the industry.
More than 500 workers attended.
