Quantity of water drawn for domestic purposes from Siruvani to Coimbatore slashed down due to summer

The amount of water drawn from the Siruvani reservoir for Coimbatore has been reduced due to the water level decrease in the dam, owing to summer.

Coimbatore: The drinking water drawn for domestic purposes for Coimbatore has been reduced due to summer.

The amount of water drawn from the Siruvani reservoir for Coimbatore has been reduced due to the water level decrease in the water level in the dam, as we have slipped into the summer season.

Drinking water is supplied from Siruvani Dam to 26 wards in Coimbatore city and villages around the city. The water level in the dam rose to 874 metres due to good southwest monsoon last July and August. However, the Government of Kerala, who maintains the Siruvani Dam, does not allow the water reach the brim, 878.50 metres reportedly for safety reasons.

And as a result to this, the water level in the Siruvani Dam has not reached full capacity since August 2020. The water level in the dam, which was at 871 metres last January, gradually began to decline due to the humid weather conditions which were prevalent from February. According to reports, as of yesterday, the water level in Siruvani Dam is 868 metres.

This has in turn resulted in reduced water drawn from the dam, from 9 crore litres daily to 7 crore litres per day. Water is drawn from the dam for drinking water purposes.

Speaking to SimpliCity, an official from the Water Board Officials stated that, “The water storage in the dam is expected to last till the end of May or June. If the water level in the dam continues to decrease, the amount of water drawn from the dam is also likely to be further reduced.”
