A special conference of women construction workers of Tamil Nadu AITUC Building Workers Union was held on Women's Day yesterday, 8th March, at the Divyodaya Stadium opposite the Railway station under the chairmanship of District President J Kala.

A special conference of women construction workers of Tamil Nadu AITUC Building Workers Union was held on Women's Day yesterday, 8th March, at the Divyodaya Stadium opposite the Railway station under the chairmanship of District President J Kala. Secretary of the organisation, C. Nandini. Inaugurated the conference and 16 leading functionaries including Treasurer Rani and state committee member Sathya Senthil took the lead.
Mallika Purushothaman, Prabha Ravindran, Shanti Chandran, Mohan and Pollachi Town Council member Uma Maheshwari, who were elected as members of the Coimbatore House at the special conference, and they were specially honoured.
Coimbatore District Bank Employees Union Administrator Aishwarya Devi, M V Rajan, Advocate A Subramanian and State Deputy General Secretary of the Association N Selvaraj delivered the special address. District Vice Presidents of the Association R. Balakrishnan, N. Somasundaram, Secretaries Kottai R. Narayanan greeted the gatherers.
A set of 6 resolutions were passed in the conference for the welfare of the women construction workers.
1. Increase in migrant workers has caused a severe loss of jobs for women workers and other workers in the construction industry, thus affecting their livelihood. Therefore, to compensate for unemployment, 85 percent of jobs should be set aside for local workers.
2. Women workers should be trained in all sectors of the construction industry to guarantee employment opportunities and pay salaries for the duration of training.
3. Equal pay should be paid for equal work and guarantee legal salaries to women workers in the construction industry.
4. The retirement age of women construction workers should be reduced from 60 to 50.
5. Maternity Benefits for the women workers in the construction sector should be given as per the maternity benefits act, with a maternity leave and a salary of six months.
6. Young widows have been on the rise in the construction sectors lately. A sum of Rs 5,000 per month should be provided to such young widows.
It was unanimously decided that these resolutions passed by the Special Conference of Women Construction Workers will be sent to the Chief Minister and The Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
