The locals in a village in Avinashi Taluk, Tirupur have demanded a government order assuring that the SIPCOT Industrial Park will not be constructed in the Punjai Thamaraikulam, Thattanur, Pulippar regions as the villages depend majorly on agriculture
Tirupur:The locals in a village in Avinashi Taluk, Tirupur have demanded a government order assuring that the SIPCOT Industrial Park will not be constructed in the area.
More than 10,000 families and more than 30,000 people live in Thattanur Panchayat, Punjai Thamaraikulam Panchayat and Pulipar Panchayat in Avinashi taluk of Tirupur district. Agriculture and agro-based industries are predominant throughout the region.

In January last year, the government announced the cancellation of SIPCOT as a result of repeated petitions to the government in protest against the formation of SIPCOT in Thattanur Panchayat. Reportedly, last month officials arrived to review SIPCOT and surveyed the land. The fifth pumping station of Avinasi Athikadavu project is nearing completion at the site within the new area currently under study.
The locals also report that if the SIPCOT industrial complex is constructed in the area, that might result in ground water pollution and the public in the surrounding rural areas might suffer health hazards.
A petition was submitted to the District Collectorate, Tirupur today on behalf of the people of Adhanur Panchayat of Avinashi taluk to assure with a Government order that the SIPCOT project will be cancelled and the park will not be constructed.
