Kalpana Anandakumar is the first DMK Mayor of Coimbatore and was elected unanimously.
Coimbatore: Kalpana Anandakumar took charge on Friday as the first Woman Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation.
A member of the 19th Ward Council, Kalpana Anandakumar has the dual distinction of becoming the first Woman Mayor of Coimbatore Corporation and the first Mayor of DMK.
Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer, Raja Gopal Sunkara presented the certificate of election as Mayor to Kalpana Anandakumar who had donned the Mayor's robe.
She took charge as the Mayor of Coimbatore thereafter and sat on the Mayor’s Chair, holding a mace.
Minister Senthil Balaji was present and greeted Kalpana with a bouquet of flowers.
DMK functionaries and Members of the House greeted Kalpana with a shawl.
Mayor Kalpana then signed and took charge of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation Office. Mayor Kalpana first signed the order for the construction of toilets in Corporation Higher Secondary School in the Pioneer Mill area of Coimbatore at an estimated cost of Rs.16 lakhs.
Addressing a press conference thereafter, Mayor Kalpana thanked the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin and Udayanidhi Stalin for giving her this rare opportunity. “I will meet the public directly and listen to their demands. The public can always meet me to put forth their issues, and I promise to work with people as a commoner,” reiterated Mayor Kalpana.
She also assured that she would work to her fullest, and be worthy of the confidence invested in her by the Chief Minister. "Steps will be taken to ensure uninterrupted drinking water in the 100 Wards of Coimbatore Corporation and street lighting and road facilities will be improved. There will be complete focus on improving schools and improving basic infrastructure too," emphasized Mayor Kalapana.
