Kalpana of DMK who won the local body elections in Coimbatore, Ward 19 has expressed her happiness and gratitude after being named as the Mayor candidate by the party.
Coimbatore: Kalpana Anandkumar, is all set to become the first woman Mayor of Coimbatore, after the DMK headquarters on Thursday announced the final list of Mayor, Deputy Mayor candidates to be elected in an indirect election across all Corporations in the state on March 4.
The elected 100 Councillors took oath on Wednesday March 2, as members of the Coimbatore Municipal Council. Followed by this, the indirect elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held tomorrow at the Victoria Hall in Corporation Head Office in Townhall.
While Kalpana's name has been proposed for the post of the Mayor, Vetri Selvan who won in Ward 92, has been named as the Deputy Mayor Candidate.

“Thanks to Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin and Minister Senthil Balaji for giving me the opportunity. Coming from an ordinary background, the party has accorded me this priceless opportunity", she said.
Kalpana hails from Maniyakarampalayam in Coimbatore. She did not pursue education after grade 10. A mother of two children, Kalpana, a homemaker lives in a rented home with her husband Anandkumar who runs an e-service center in Ward 19.
Commenting on the announcement of the Mayor candidate, Kalpana said her family has been working in DMK for the past three generations.
“When asked for a chance to contest the elections for the first time, the party was open to give me a chance. Now adding to the victory, it is heartening to see that the party hs announced me as the Mayor Candidate.”
She expressed her gratitude to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin, for the opportunity, and Minister Senthil Balaji and thanked the volunteers who worked for her and the public who voted for her.
"Priorties will be given to enhance the basic amenities across all wards of the Corporation. Will work day and night to solve the issues of the public and make Coimbatore a leading ward in the state", Kalpana vowed.
