Pollachi: A 5-year-old female elephant that suffered an injury in its hind limb was rescued and taken to the elephant training camp in Varakaliyaru for further treatment.
The forest department had received information that a 5-year-old female elephant was stranded without food after suffering an injury in its back leg, in a dense forest area near Top Slip, Anaimalai Tiger Reserve near Pollachi. Forest officials visited the spot on Sunday and examined the elephant’s condition.
Upon information, the forest veterinary surgeons led by Anamalai Tiger Reserve Field Director Ramasubramaniyam arrived at the spot.
With the help of Kumki elephants at Top Slip Kozhikode camp, forest department employees and medical teams administered first aid to the elephant for its leg injury. The elephant later was fed healthy food including bananas.
Following this, a team has been constituted on behalf of the forest department to take the injured 5-year-old female elephant to Varakaliyar elephant training camp and keep it in a 'kraal' under constant medical observation until it recovers from its wounds.
