Trekking ban to Velliangiri Hills in Coimbatore lifted after 2 years; Devotees overjoyed ahead of Maha Shivarathri

The ban imposed on trekking to the Shiva temple in Velliangiri Hills has been lifted after two long years, leaving devotees from all districts in TN elated at the news ahead of Maha Shivarathri.

Coimbatore: The ban imposed on trekking to the Shiva temple in Velliangiri Hills has been lifted after two long years in Coimbatore, just in time for Maha Shivarathri.

The news of the ban having been lifted left devotees overjoyed since they can now trek to the Poondi Velliangiri Shiva Temple located in the Western Ghats, in Coimbatore. The public usually visits the temple, especially during Maha Shivarathri, every year. In the past two years, the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as increased wildlife movement in the area had dampened the spirits of devotees.

A large number of devotees from other districts of Tamil Nadu including Tirupur, Erode, Madurai, Chennai and Trichy are thronging Coimbatore now after receiving information about the ban on trekking being lifted.

Trekkers will undergo a checking at the forest check post before trekking, along with a body temperature check on account of the Covid-19 pandemic preventive measures.

Forest officials have also compulsorily seized plastics from visitors who were trekking into the forest and also advised them not to travel in crowds. The devotees were advised to trek with utmost care and not litter the forest pathways.

The Coimbatore district administration is expecting large crowds of devotees this year.
