Coimbatore: Hundreds of men, women of Dhaliyur protested in front of the site where a new TASMAC outlet is slated to open, demanding that the plan to open the outlet is revoked.
Public from the Dhaliyur Pannimadai panchayat protested after reports that a new TASMAC shop was coming up in Pannimadai Panchayat near Thudiyalur.
The police rushed to the spot after receiving information of the protestors and held peace talks with the agitators. They stated that there was a large garden in the area and the opening of a TASMAC outlet in the area poses questions of safety to the women and children passing through this route. They mentioned that it was already decided that no TASMAC outlet shall be set up in the Panchayat and a resolution has also been passed at the gram sabha meeting.
They warned of staging protests blocking roads if steps were taken to set up the liquor shop. The police assured that their request will be taken and no TASMAC outlet will be set up in the area.
Further, a complaint should be lodged with the District Collector and The Regional Manager of TASMAC regarding this, after which they dispersed. The agitators staged a sit-in protest at the location shouting slogans that created a stir in the area for some time.
