The former AIADMK Minister SP Velumani has alleged that the urban local body elections held in Coimbatore was an assassination of democracy and condemned the arrest of Minister Jayakumar.
Coimbatore: AIADMK staged a protest condemning the local polls held in Coimbatore, led by the former Minister SP Velumani.
A protest was held on behalf of Coimbatore District AIADMK today, 28th February, to condemn the irregularities in the local body elections in Coimbatore.
The protest was led by former Minister SP Veumani and MLAs Amman Arjunan, PRG Arun Kumar took the lead.
They had gathered in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar office, and in the protest they also condemned the arrest of former minister Jayakumar.
The protestors also pressed for the withdrawal of the false cases being filed against AIADMK across Tamil Nadu.
Velumani stated that the survey showed people voted for AIADMK, but the ruling party had dodged the results. During his press address he stated that “We are protesting today to condemn the DMK government, the arrest of former minister Jayakumar, pressed for speedy completion of the AIADMK's proposals and withdraw the false case against AIADMK functionaries in Coimbatore.”
He added that AIADMK would have secured more than 85 wards if the elections were held fair, but DMK managed to bribe public with money and anklets with police protection. Asking to count the votes cast between 5 and 6 in the evening, Velumani stated that DMK swapped their votes to AIADMK to call this a win.
He called the police slaves of DMK and stated that they should walk their heads held high, not letting such irregularities happen. In case they failed, he added, the police officers will be transferred, nothing beyond that. Velumani said that they weren’t afraid of DMK’s acts and called this election an assassination of democrasy.
Mentioning no new scheme was brought to Covai in the past 9 months rule, he stated that DMK has ‘betrayed public’ while all of them voted for AIADMK. He alleged that the authorities, police and DMK have formed an alliance and defeated public and called Congress and Communist parties mere buttery flatterers.
“This election in Coimbatore is a first of its kind and it is a democratic assassination. Industries in Coimbatore have been paralysed. Brick kilns are damaged, power loom workers are protesting and all industries are paralyzed because they are unable to build buildings.”
Veumani stated that DMK should do some good for the people with the authority in their hands and demanded that the schemes brought in by AIADMK be implemented at the earliest. He issued a warning stating DMK has to stop filing false cases on the AIADMK.
More than 3,000 people participated, including MLAs K R Jayaram Amul Kandasamy, A K Selvaraj Sulur Kandasamy Damodaran Suburban South District MGR Youth Wing Secretary Engineer Chandrasekhar and former MLAs Edimada Shanmugam OK Chinnaraj Kasturi Vasu.
