The locals in Cheranmanagar have demanded that the water in two overhead reservoirs in the area be cleaned immediately, which has been neglected for last five years.
Coimbatore:The water in the two overhead reservoirs in Cheranmanagar area has not been cleaned for the past five years and public fear health hazard due to consumption of unclean water. The new council member of Cheranmanagar has a plethora of tasks in his area to be attended to. The locals have raised concerns over the un cleaned over head drinking water reservoir, which serves as the major source of water for the residents.
There are about 568 residences in Cheranmanagar area on Vilankurichi road, and two overhead tanks have been constructed for the drinking water purposes. However, the residents allege that the tank has been neglected of sanitation at proper intervals and the unclean water is a threat to human health.
The public stated that, 'Two overhead reservoir tanks were constructed in Cheranmanagar to meet the drinking water needs of the people. It has remained unmaintained for the past years and though S P Velumani of Coimbatore served as the Local Body Minister in the last AIADMK regime, no action was initiated by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation on the plight of the reservoir tank.'
The residents stated that a petition was filed with the Tamil Nadu Local Body Office in Chennai but no action was taken and then the complaint was brought to the notice of the National Human Rights Commission in Delhi. On the orders of the agency, two overhead reservoir tanks in Cheranmanagar were renovated and painted, however, the water inside was not cleaned. The locals stated that it is increasing the risk of disease spread. Now that the new council member has been elected, they expect him to take appropriate action on the issue.
