The major reason for the low voter turnout in Cheran ma Nagar area is cited as the Election Commission's confusion in preparing electoral rolls.
Coimbatore: With names of 400 deceased on the electoral rolls in Coimbatore's Cheran ma Nagar area, 700 people from the area ended up getting two polling booths as their voting destinations, leading to a reduction in vote percentage in Cheranma Nagar area on Vilankurichi Road.
Cheran ma Nagar State Transport Corporation employees and officers reside at Vilankurichi Road area in Coimbatore, in 568 houses in 3 categories - A,B,C. Besides this, thousands of houses have been constructed in the neighbourhood. The Coimbatore Corporation has 58 Nagars in the area under Ward 22 with 13,788 voters. However, only 7,276 votes were cast in Ward 22 where Cheran ma Nagar is located in the just-concluded urban local body elections.
Analysing the reason behind came as a shocker. Names of 400 deceased had been included in the electoral list while 700 people had their booths located in two different destinations. A senior political party functionary said, "The Election Commission's confusion is the reason for the low voter turnout in Ward 22, where Cheran ma Nagar is located.
Many voters did not receive their booth slip properly and in some cases, the polling booths for the members of the same family were at different places. Another major reason for the decline in voting is that the polling center for those in Cheran ma Nagar was allotted at Dharmasastha School which is 3 km away and hence many eligible voters lost interest in casting their votes due to the distance," he added.
The senior functionary alleged that the major reason for the low voter turnout in Cheran ma Nagar area was due to the Election Commission's confusion in preparing the elctoral rolls.
