Local body polls 2022: Coimbatore records 59.61 percent voter turnout, town panchayats fare better with 73.83 percent

While the overall voting percentage stood at 59.06 percent, the Corporation recorded a voting of 53.61 percent, 7 municipalities recorded 67.09 percent and the 33 town panchayats recorded 73.83 percent.



The urban civic polls underway in Coimbatore witnessed an overall polling percentage of 59.06

percent on Saturday, according to the District Election Officer.

The voting exercise that began at 7 AM today was held in a single phase across the state to elect over 12,500 ward members in 640 plus urban local bodies.

While the overall voting percentage stood at 59.06 percent, the Coimbatore Corporation encompassing of 100 wards recorded a voting of 53.61 percent, 7 municipalities recorded67.09 percent and the 33 town panchayats recorded 73.83 percent.

Voting ended at 5 PM and 1 hour from 5 PM to 6 PM was earmarked for those affected by Covid. Tense moments prevailed in several voting booths within the Corporation, as voters were turned back after 5 PM.

Political parties staged agitation accusing the election officials of not granting additional hours and compensating a late start.

The counting of votes would commence on February 22. The urban civic polls were last held in Tamil Nadu in 2011 during AIADMK regime.
