The District Collector Dr GS Sameeran after casting his vote at the booth in Nirmala College for women, told the reporters that a live monitoring of the sensitive polling booths is arranged to ensure security.
Coimbatore: The sensitive polling booths are being monitored through CCTV cameras live, in Coimbatore.
The Urban local body elections are being held for one Corporation, 7 Municipalities and 33 Town Panchayats in Coimbatore district on Saturday, 19th February. With 2,303 polling booths set up, 424 are in tense areas for which additional surveillance has been put in place.
CCTV cameras have been installed at the sensitive booths and live monitoring has been arranged.
The Coimbatore District Collector Sameeran cast his vote at the polling booth set up at Nirmala College for Women.
Addressing the press after that the Collector stated that the voting process has been running smooth since 7 am and urged that the public should cooperate to ensure harmony and peace during the election process.
“As many as 2,770 police personnel are on guard. As of Friday, 71 flying squads were engaged in surveillance operations. The Special Observer appointed to Coimbatore District and the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation are all engaged in continuous monitoring work.”
He added that the necessary steps have been taken to ensure that the elections are held peacefully. A real time web casting has been arranged at the ‘sensitive’ polling booths and 17 engineers have been appointed to fix voting machine faults.
Checking were done to identify for the presence of other district people and the team inspected hotels, lodges and marriage halls. None have been found so far. A vehicle search was also done. A series of complaints of violating election code and money for votes have been registered and action has been taken", he said.
A total of 3,366 candidates are contesting for 802 posts and a total of 23,88,263 people are eligible to vote in this election.
86 flying squads have been formed to check electoral irregularities. 51 micro observers are engaged in intensive monitoring work at polling booths. A total of 10,133 people are engaged in election work.
While a total of 811 posts were to be held in the urban local body elections in Coimbatore district, nine candidates were elected unopposed in Periya Negamam Town Panchayat, in which DMK candidates have won the contests unopposed.
Counting of votes will be held in 17 centres on 22nd of February.
