IAS Officer S Nagarajan appointed as Special Election Observer for Coimbatore

The State Election Commission (SEC) has appointed IAS officer S Nagarajan as the Special Election Observer for Coimbatore district  ahead of the urban local body elections on Saturday.

Coimbatore: The State Election Commission (SEC) has appointed IAS officer S Nagarajan as the Special Election Observer for Coimbatore, ahead of the urban local body elections on February 19.

The SEC has issued an order to monitor the implementation of the Election Code of Conduct in Coimbatore and file a report.

Tense moments prevailed in the city on Friday after DMK and AIADMK members clashed in Ward 100 followed by a series of road roko by both parties. Earlier, 9 AIADMK MLAs led by former Minister S P. Velumaniand 20 AIADMK functionaries were arrested for staging dharna in the Collectorate alleging multiple irregularities by DMK.

Questioning, if the local body polls will be held in a fair manner and peacefully, the AIADMK MLAs alleged that the top government officials in Coimbatore have turned blind eye towards the penetration of rowdy gangs from other districts in Coimbatore.

Pointing that the gangs from other districts especially Karur and Chennai are mobilising cash and gifts to voters, SP Velumani alleged that DMK has resorted to all sorts of irregularities in the fear of defeat. They also jointly petitioned to the Collector to depute paramilitary forces, to ensure smooth conduct of the local body polls.
