Coimbatore: Two weeks of intense campaigning by political parties and independent candidates came to an end this evening at 6 PM, as directed by the election commission. Parties are now eagerly awaiting the polls to be held on February 19, Saturday.

After the release of final list of candidates on February 7, the campaigning took off at rocket speed across all 100 wards of Coimbatore Corporation, Municipality and Town Panchayat.

Door to door campaigning, rallies and all novel ways to woo the voters were carried out in the past two weeks by all parties including independent candidates who garnered the attention of the media.

From rolling chapatis to cleaning sewers, the candidates went way beyond their agenda to attract the attention of the voters in their wards. With promises to upgrade all basic amenities to setting up of parks, regularising water distribution, better roads, the candidates made several promises apart from the ones mentioned in the manifesto.

While key speakers of DMK elaborated on the various developmental works by the party and took a dig on BJP alleging anti-people policies against social justice, and highlighted the corruption by AIADMK in Coimbatore Corporation at large.

All the key speakers including DMK Youth wing Secretary Udhyanidhi Stalin mentioned on losing all seats in the last state assembly elections. They appealed to people to choose their ward candidates wisely by supporting DMK and allied parties.

"If you want centre's benefits to Coimbatore, then you should be voting for BJP" was the repeated statement by BJP State President K. Annamalai during his campaign in Coimbatore. He and Vanathi Srinivasan, National Women's Wing President and South MLA, went hard against Minister Senthil Balaji of DMK, Incharge for Coimbatore and threw allegations of penetration of Karur DMK membersin Coimbatore.

Seconding their accusation, the opposition party AIADMK petitioned the Collector, Police Commissioner and the Governor to send the Karur Minister Senthil Balaji from Coimbatore. Having him here has created ruckus in the city which possibly might affect the smooth conduct of the elections. Both BJP and the AIADMK tipped-off the election flying squad multiple times, of gifts being distributed by allegedly people from Karur instigated by Minister Senthil Balaji.

Hot boxes, anklets and cash in few places including Ward 80 were seized by the flying squad and investigations are on.

Thus the slugfest between the parties came to a screeching halt this evening and party cadres are holding tight for their campaigns to yield result when voting starts on February 19th, the polling date.

Security has been beefed up in the city to avoid any untoward incidents and across all polling booths in the district.
