Communist party members expelled from party after complaint against DMK candidate in Coimbatore

Two members of the Indian Communist Party were expelled from the party on Wednesday, 16th February, after they complained to the returning officer against the DMK woman candidate contesting from Coimbatore Municipal Corporation.


Coimbatore: Two members of the Indian Communist Party were expelled from the party after they complained against the DMK woman candidate contesting from Coimbatore Municipal Corporation.

A complaint was lodged with the Returning officer of Coimbatore by Niranjana, a candidate in urban local Body elections against the 22-year-old Nivetha Senathipathi, daughter of DMK East District In-charge Senathipathi, who contesting in Ward 97 of Coimbatore Corporation. The complaint petition stated that Niveitha has spent over two crores only to offer gifts, ‘Idly Cookers’ to the public for votes, which was against the election code of conduct. It also stated that Niveitha reportedly offered deals to the independent candidates as well.

Issues were already brewing as Nivetha belonging to Ward 38 is contesting in a different ward and there is no harmonious atmosphere within the party. Krishnamurti, a member of the party's responsibility committee, is contesting against her as an independent. Similarly, Niranjana Devi of the coalition party, Communist Party of India, is contesting as an independent candidate at ward 97.

The petition read, “Nivthda, a political party candidate contesting in the ward, has distributed idli cookers to 591 houses in Kasturi Garden area and negotiated deals with the independent candidates.” The petition demanded that Nivthda be disqualified from contesting the election and also suggested that criminal action is taken against her.

In this context, Niranjana Devi, her husband Vijayakumar, also of CPI are removed from the basic membership of the party.
