Coimbatore: Election Officers in Coimbatore District are intensely scrutinizing procedures even as election campaigning, meetings and processions draw to a close at 6 pm on Thursday, February 17.
The Tamil Nadu Election Commission has stipulated that all campaigns, processions and political meetings should end 48 hours prior to the date of election,as per the Election Code of Conduct. According to the ECC, no party should campaign directly and indirectly beyond 6 pm, on Thursday.
Since today was the only day for campaigning in Coimbatore district, candidates have been thronging the streets since morning to meet the public in person and rally their support. Urban local body elections will be held on February 19 in 100 wards of Coimbatore Corporation. The filing of nominations was held from January 28 to Febraury 4, and the petition consultation was held on January 5.
The elections will be held for 802 posts in Coimbatore district since some candidates were elected unopposed in 9 wards in Town Panchayats. A total of 3,366 candidates are contesting in the urban local body elections with 776 in 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation, 861 in Corporation and 1727 in Municipalities.
