Urban Local Polls Coimbatore; CPM Chief G Ramakrishnan advises Edappadi Palaniswamy to ‘read’ Indian Constitution

The Marxist Communist Party Politburo member, while campaigning here in the city advised the AIADMK Head Edappadi Palaniswamy to read the constitution first.

Coimbatore: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member G Ramakrishnan campaigned in Coimbatore for urban local body elections.

The Marxist Politburo member G Ramakrishnan campaigned rallying support for the candidates of the Marxist Party and the Secular Progressive Alliance. He collected votes for the Marxist candidates S Stalin Kumar, Rajeshwari and DMK alliance candidates Chandran, Lokanayaki and Kanchana. He then addressed at the Irugur market ground.

He stated that he wishes to convert Irugur Town panchayat into a stronger region and demanded public votes for the candidates of DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. On the previous regime, he stated that AIADMK flouted the democratic duty of holding local body elections.

He said, “It was only in 1992 that the new Panchayat Urban Local Body Act was passed. A constitutional amendment was introduced in Parliament requiring elections at the local bodies to be hosted once in every five years. But during the last AIADMK regime, it was the authorities who exercised power on the local bodies for five years without holding local body elections. Just like the Legislative Assembly and Parliament elections are held every five years, local bodies elections should also be conducted every five years. But this democratic duty was not fulfilled by the last AIADMK regime”.

Ramakrishnan stated that Edappadi Palaniswami was not ready to talk about it and instead he supports the ‘one country and one election’ proposed by the Union Government. He subsequently questioned Edappadi Palaniswami if he really knew the constitution, before commenting on taking their throne back in 2024.

Ramakrishnan said that if a party is elected to the Legislature and comes to power, it can continue rule for a full period of five years. If a party or coalition wins the parliamentary elections and comes to power, it can continue to remain in power for five years. He then raised a question will the governments be dissolved in UP and in four other states after two years, as they are going to polls. He then questioned on AIADMK’s solutions to the problems of the public, and asked if any of the demands were met.

Calling AIADMK a puppet to BJP, Ramakrishnan alleged of the fascist rule of BJP in the centre and said that AIADMK’s nod to NEET has been affecting students, the GST imposed by BJP is affecting the micro enterprises in Coimbatore, and has contributed to the raw material price hike.

“We are happy to say that we have saved Tamil Nadu by defeating the AIADMK and BJP alliance in the assembly elections in May as the rights of Tamil Nadu will be completely affected by these two governments.” He added that the BJP was a fanatic government and AIADMK government was against people. He said that the Union government will be present in Delhi, and the state government headquarters in Chennai, but the local bodies were the closest form of solution to the public and urged to vote for DMK, Congress candidates.

He then said that the AIADMK government failed to hold local body elections, which is a key factor, and turned into a completely corrupted administration.

DMK leadership member Chandran, city secretary Mani, Marxist Party's U K Sivagnanam, K Palanisamy, Shanmugasundaram, Vijayaraghavan, Congress Party's Ponnuswamy, Viduthalai Panthers Chandrasekaran, MDMK Chandrasekhar and others participated in the campaign rally in Irugur. Following this, G Ramakrishnan campaigned in Sulur Town Panchayat and Kinathukadavuvu, Pollachi and Anaimalai.
