Flying squad in Coimbatore seizes ₹ 43.15 lakhs cash and silk sarees worth 7 lakhs in 19 days in checking

The Election Flying Squad on duty since the election code of conduct came into force have so far seized Rs.43.15 lakhs cash in vehicle checks conducted in the 19 days.


Coimbatore: The Election Flying Squad have so far seized Rs.43.15 lakhs cash in vehicle checks conducted in the 19 days in Coimbatore.

The urban local body election monitoring activities in Coimbatore Corporation areas have been brisk since the election code of conduct came into force. As many as 15 flying squads have been formed in 5 zones at the rate of one flying squad per shift per zone and 3 flying squads each for 3 shifts. The flying squad officials have been engaged in surveillance operations since January 28.

Additionally, surveillance cameras are installed in the rooms of all Municipal Corporation Election Officers and Assistant Election Officers. Corporation has 15, 61,819 voters in 100 wards. 1290 polling stations will be set up out of which, 169 polling stations have been identified as sensitive. So far, a sum of Rs.43.15 lakhs has been seized by the flying squad. The cash was being carrying without valid documents.

An official of the Corporation election division said, "A sum of Rs.43.15 lakh has been seized by the flying squad in 19 days from January 28 to February 15 in Coimbatore corporation areas. A total of 3771 silk sarees worth Rs.7.44 lakh have also been seized."
