The Ooty all women police, based on the information received from Ooty Child Helpline, investigated and arrested the mother and the 26-year-old husband of a 15-year-old girl under POCSO Act for forcing her into marriage.
The Nilgiris: The Ooty All Women Police have arrested two people for the offense of child marriage.
The Nilgiris Child Helpline informed the all-women police station on the tip-off they received regarding a child marriage offense, in which, a girl’s mother and an auto driver have been arrested under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
A 15-year-old girl from Ooty in Nilgiris district is studying 10th grade, was reportedly forced into marrying a 26-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, Selvaraj of Saidapet, Chennai. Selvaraj and the girl were living in Chennai after marriage and he recently took her to Ooty.
Meanwhile, the Nilgiris District ChildLine had received a complaint that the girl had been forced into marriage. The organization lodged a complaint with the Ooty All Women Police Station. On the complaint, the police summoned the girl's mother and Selvaraj, to the police station and questioned them separately. Investigations revealed that the girl was forced to marry the man.
The police then registered a case against the girl's mother and auto driver Selvaraj, who married her, under POCSO Act and arrested the two.
