Coimbatore: The 37-year-old independent candidate contesting in ward number 42 in the city is a physical education instructor, a fish vendor in the morning and evening, aspiring to serve the people in his locality.
The candidate is a fish vendor in the morning, physical education trainer during the day, and sells fried fish in the evening. This is the profile of a 37-year-old independent candidate contesting in ward number 42 in Coimbatore for urban local polls.
In the wake of the urban local body elections, political parties and the independent candidates in Coimbatore are involved in brisk campaigning.
Maruthu Pandian, (37), is contesting in ward 42 and has said that he had been living in Kovilmedu since childhood and has been living in the area for 37 years. His father was a fish vendor, and with the money earned, he funded his sons education.
'I was also involved in the business to help my father. Now that my father's health has deteriorated, I take full care of the fish business myself. I am also a physical education teacher in a private school and am also imparting kabaddi training to students.'
With 56 streets in Kovilmedu, there are no essential needs for the people. Drinking water, sanitation, road facilities, street lights, etc. are not provided properly. Adding that such essential problems continue to exist in Kovilmedu and Velandipalayam areas, he stated that he is contesting independently at ward 42, with the shuttle bat symbol. He is campaigning for himself alone. Quoting that self-help is the best help, Maruthu Pandian said that he wants to create awareness among the youth.
