Judge N Lokeswaran yesterday sentenced Karuppusamy and Arunkumar to 20 years in jail each and fined them Rs 4 lakh.
Coimbatore: A Coimbatore court has sentenced two youths to 20 years in prison each for smuggling ganja to Kerala by ambulance. Coimbatore Narcotics Intelligence Unit police received a tip-off that a private ambulance owner from Udumalai, Tirupur district, was smuggling ganja worth crores.
On October 22, 2019, an ambulance travelling from Udumalai to Kerala was stopped by the police near the Udumalai power plant. When checked, 240 kg of ganja was found.
Ambulance driver Arunkumar (24) from Udumalai was caught. Owner Karuppusamy (33) escaped. The investigation revealed that the ganja was smuggled by ambulance from Andhra Pradesh. Police seized 260 kg of ganja from 13 bundles during a search of Karuppasamy's house. Later Karuppasamy was arrested. The case was heard in the Narcotics Prevention Court in the Coimbatore Combined Court Complex. Following the conclusion of the trial, Judge N Lokeswaran yesterday sentenced Karuppusamy and Arunkumar to 20 years imprisonment each and fined them Rs 4 lakh. In this case, the Government Special Advocate V. Sivakumar appeared.
