Wage worker killed in dispute near Sulur; Family struggles to take action against attacking Kongu Vellalar community

Coimbatore: A labourer who was attacked due to a dispute near Sulur died at a Coimbatore government hospital last night. His family and a section of political parties are engaged in a struggle demanding legal action against the members of the Kongu Vellalar community who attacked him. Following the completion of the autopsy, there was a commotion as relatives, who refused to buy his body, were engaged in a struggle in front of the Coimbatore Government Hospital morgue.



Ramu, was a labourer from Ponnakani area in Sulur area, was on his way home in a two-wheeler after work in January when an argument broke out between him and Mayilsamy, from Bogampatti area, who was riding a two-wheeler. Following this, Mayilsami, a member of the Kongu Vellalar caste, is said to have frequently quarrelled calling out Ramu’s caste. In the last few days, a gang of 20 people went to Ramu's house and attacked him and damaged the items in the house.



After the incident, Ramu, was admitted to Coimbatore Government Hospital, with serious injuries. He succumbed to his injuries last night. Ramu's family, relatives and a section of political parties, including the Dravidar Tamil Party and the Viduthalai Siruthaigal, refused to accept his body and staged a protest in front of the Government Hospital autopsy building. Protesters chanted slogans calling for the immediate arrest of those involved in the incident. Following this, the police arrived at the scene and negotiated a settlement with them. Thus, the unrest in the region continues. It is to be noted that Ramu's wife Lakshmi had lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore District Collector's Office two days ago regarding the incident.
